What is the 100th Day of School?
A hundred days of laughter and learning have come and gone, and it’s time to reflect on everything you have to show for it! The 100th Day of School 2024 is a symbolic celebration of students’ achievements during the academic year.
The event evolved to develop students’ understanding and recognition of numbers up to 100. It’s ideal for supporting math milestones from pre-kindergarten up to second grade.
Nowadays, students of all ages and grade levels can get in on the action!
When is the 100th Day of School?
The actual date of this event varies from school to school. Many schools begin at different times depending on the season, the prior school year's end, or holidays. Most begin anywhere between mid-August to early September, so most classes reach their 100th day between the end of January and mid-February.

How is the 100th Day of School celebrated?
The 100th Day of School is widely celebrated in preschools, kindergartens, and elementary schools as a fun milestone to break up the school year. Special lessons and activities are prepared to celebrate the day.
For example, students might be challenged to write 100 words, count to 100, sing songs about the number 100, or write 100 reasons why they love their school! It’s also common to see students and teachers dress in costumes to pretend they are 100 years old.
The countdown provides an incredible opportunity for many cross-curricular activities. Use the celebration to address Common Core Standards in counting, cardinality, and number and operations in base ten.
How can I celebrate the 100th Day of School 2024 with my class?
Here’s a quick list of five no-prep ideas to make the 100th Day of School one to remember:
- As a class, come up with a list of 100 things your students have learned this year. It can include new skills, fun facts, and anything else they think deserves a spot on the list!
- Decorate a shirt with 100 buttons, sequins, or googly eyes. Not only can this improve counting skills, but it can also give children a fun keepsake to take home.
- Create a trivia quiz with 100 questions, and have students go head-to-head in teams.
- Write a 100-word story. Let children’s imaginations run wild, then encourage keen writers to share their stories with the class.
- Plan for physical education and include a movement break for the 100th day. Can children do 100 jumping jacks, take 100 steps, or hop 100 times?
